Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay will officially launch the “Thaaimaman Thanga Mothiram Thittam” scheme on Monday at the Government Rajaji Hospital in Madurai. Under the initiative, which fulfills a key election promise made by the ruling TVK, the state government will provide a one-gram, 22-carat gold ring to eligible infants born in state-run hospitals.
The Chief Minister is scheduled to arrive by special flight and inaugurate the scheme at the hospital auditorium before visiting the maternity ward to personally present gold rings to 25 newborns. The scheme was originally scheduled for rollout on Sept. 15, the birth anniversary of former Chief Minister C.N. Annadurai, but was postponed due to Vijay’s trip to London.
The state government has allocated an annual outlay of Rs 755.83 crore for the initiative, with 1.28 lakh gold rings made ready for the initial phase. According to an official press release, the rings will feature unique serial numbers and will be distributed in tamper-proof packaging to beneficiaries upon their discharge from hospitals.
To qualify for the scheme, beneficiaries must be registered under the state’s Pregnancy and Infant Cohort Monitoring and Evaluation system and possess a Reproductive and Child Health ID. Work orders to supply the gold rings were issued to Joyalukkas and Kalyan Jewellers following a Government Order notified on June 23.
The program will be rolled out statewide, except in areas under the Maduranthakam and Dharapuram Assembly constituencies due to bypolls scheduled for Oct. 6. Implementation, inventory tracking, and distribution transparency will be overseen in each district by specialized monitoring committees headed by the respective district Collectors.
Government statistics show that roughly 7.80 lakh children are born in Tamil Nadu annually. Data from the National Family Health Survey-6 indicates that 99.9 percent of these births take place in healthcare institutions, with about 53 percent—approximately 4.20 lakh deliveries—occurring in state-run hospitals. Government officials noted that the scheme aims to build public trust in state healthcare services and promote safe delivery practices. Following the hospital launch, Vijay is also slated to open the renovated Gandhi Memorial Museum.
