The Bharatiya Janata Party secured 38 out of 44 seats in the Gandhinagar Municipal Corporation elections in Gujarat, retaining its administrative hold over the state capital’s civic body.
According to election data, voter turnout reached 59.25% among the municipal corporation’s approximately 2.59 lakh registered voters. Voting was conducted on Sunday using Electronic Voting Machines, with official vote counting beginning at 9 a.m. on Tuesday. State Election Commission Joint Commissioner N K Damor confirmed that the polling process was completed peacefully.
The election results mark a continuation of the party’s governance in Gandhinagar, where it has held power for the past five years. However, the BJP’s final tally of 38 seats represents a slight reduction compared to the October 2021 civic elections, in which the party won 41 seats.
In the remaining contests across the municipality’s 44 seats, the Congress party secured five seats, while an independent candidate won one seat. The Aam Aadmi Party, which held representation following previous civic contests, failed to secure any seats in this election cycle.
The Gandhinagar civic poll results coincided with vote counting across several other local body elections and bypolls in Gujarat. Voting tallies were processed for Okha municipality in Devbhumi Dwarka district, covering 32 seats across nine wards, and Thara municipality in Banaskantha district, which featured 59 candidates contesting 24 seats across six wards. Additionally, counting took place for municipal bypolls on individual seats in Kheralu, Chhota Udepur, and Bayad, along with select district and taluka panchayat seats across the state.
Analysis: Political Implications of the Civic Results
The election outcome highlights the continued strength of the governing party’s grassroots organization in Gujarat’s political center. Retaining 38 seats ensures undisturbed policy implementation and administrative control over the municipal corporation.
At the same time, the minor decline from the party’s 2021 performance of 41 seats points to subtle shifts in specific ward constituencies. For the opposition, the Congress party’s five-seat output reflects a small gain in civic representation within the capital, whereas the Aam Aadmi Party’s failure to capture a seat emphasizes the persistent hurdle minor parties encounter when competing against established electoral machinery in urban Gujarat.
