RJD Breaks BJP’s Three‑Decade Grip on Patna Teachers Seat as Jan Suraaj Wins Darbhanga

Date:

Patna, Bihar — In the latest round of Bihar’s legislative council elections, the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) unseated the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) after a 30‑year hold on the Patna Teachers constituency, while Jan Suraaj secured a victory in the Darbhanga seat, according to results released on Oct. 28, 2026.

The Patna Teachers constituency, long represented by the BJP, saw the RJD candidate triumph, ending the party’s three‑decade tenure. In Darbhanga, Jan Suraaj of the RJD emerged victorious, adding to the party’s recent gains across the state.

Other contenders in the contests included Congress candidate Dr. Sanjay Yadav and Jan Suraaj Party nominee Divya Jyoti, both of whom were on the ballot in the respective constituencies.

In the neighboring Saran constituency, former BJP leader Rahul Raj, running as an independent after being denied a party ticket, won with 4,965 votes. His victory was noted as a setback for the National Democratic Alliance (NDA), which had fielded JD(U) candidate Anand Pushkar. Pushkar finished second with 3,150 votes, while Afaq Ahmed, representing Jan Suraaj’s party, garnered 2,454 votes.

Analysts cited Rahul Raj’s local support among teachers and dissatisfaction over ticket distribution as contributing factors to his win. Similarly, the division of votes among multiple candidates in several constituencies may have facilitated the RJD’s successes.

In the Patna Teachers race, Narendra Prasad Singh received 2,945 votes, narrowly ahead of his rival Jha, who secured 2,351 votes. Meanwhile, Communist Party of India (CPI) candidate and sitting MLC Sanjay Kumar Singh placed third with 1,967 votes.

The outcomes across the four constituencies have drawn attention to longstanding issues affecting teachers, including pay scales, promotions, transfers and other service‑related demands. Discontent over these matters is being viewed as a possible factor behind the defeats of incumbent MLCs in Patna, Darbhanga and Saran.

The results set the stage for renewed negotiations on teachers’ grievances and could reshape the balance of power within Bihar’s legislative council.
