The Indian government has mandated compulsory Bureau of Indian Standards certification for smartphone screen protectors, requiring manufacturers and sellers to obtain regulatory approval before selling these products in the country, according to an official notification dated September 21.
The mandatory standards will take effect on April 1, 2027, under an amendment to the Electronics and Information Technology Goods (Requirement of Compulsory Registration) Order, 2021. Screen protectors become the 66th product category brought under the order, joining items such as smartphones, laptops, chargers, LED televisions, microwave ovens, printers, and set-top boxes. The order specifies that screen protectors must conform to Indian standard IS 19348:2025.
The regulatory requirement aims to eliminate low-quality products from the market while supporting domestic manufacturing efforts. In 2025, the domestic market for tempered glass screen protectors was estimated at 400 million units, with a total retail value of ₹20,000 crore.
Industry representatives supported the government’s move, pointing to both consumer protection and economic benefits. Pankaj Mohindroo, chairman of the mobile device industry body India Cellular and Electronics Association (ICEA), stated that mandatory certification starting April 1, 2027, will shield consumers from sub-standard products and establish a level playing field for local and global manufacturers.
Mohindroo noted that with an annual market exceeding 500 million units, the mandate will help build a ₹12,000–16,000 crore quality-driven domestic industry. He estimated the development would create approximately 60,000 direct and indirect jobs, yield around ₹2,000 crore in Goods and Services Tax (GST) revenues, and bolster India’s potential as a global manufacturing and export hub.
Domestic electronics manufacturers are expanding production capacity ahead of the requirement. Optiemus Infracom has established a manufacturing facility in Noida to produce tempered glass screen protectors utilizing technology from U.S. material technology firm Corning.
Ashok Gupta, executive chairman of Optiemus Infracom, said the company is adding 2 crore units in planned capacity to meet emerging domestic demand. Optiemus expects to begin shipments from its Noida plant in January 2027 and projects revenue of ₹1,800 crore to ₹2,000 crore from its tempered glass screen protector business in the current financial year.
