The Delhi government has deployed 2,947 bus marshals and rolled out 56 special buses dedicated to women as part of an expanded safety network across the capital’s public transport system, Chief Minister Gupta announced in a statement.
Among the 56 special buses, 15 operate during the evening shift and carry armed women police personnel after 5 p.m. All public transit buses in the network have been integrated into a central Bus Management System, featuring panic alarms, live CCTV feeds, and GPS tracking monitored around the clock through a dedicated control center.
The initiative spans public transport, child protection, school security, and urban road infrastructure. The multi-layered safety network integrates the Women’s Helpline 181, Delhi Transport Corporation (DTC) services, and emergency monitoring channels to ensure prompt assistance during crises.
As part of wider measures for working women, the Department of Women and Child Development will soon set up additional hostel and accommodation facilities in Vishwas Nagar and Rohini.
For school safety and child welfare, statutory bodies including Child Welfare Committees and Juvenile Justice Boards remain operational to protect children’s rights. Sub-Divisional Magistrates have been designated as Child Marriage Prohibition Officers to prevent illegal child marriages. In addition, approximately 150,000 CCTV cameras have been made operational across schools, while 1,397 schools are providing self-defence training under the Rani Lakshmibai Self-Defence Training Programme.
Road safety measures under the Public Works Department (PWD) include the operation of 253,983 CCTV cameras and the installation of 96,000 streetlights, comprising 45,000 high-pressure sodium vapour lights and 51,000 LED lights across PWD-managed roads.
Analysis: Public Transit Safety and Infrastructure Integration
The administrative focus on linking physical security personnel with real-time digital monitoring represents a structural effort to address long-standing safety concerns on Delhi’s public transit network. By deploying armed personnel on targeted evening routes and connecting vehicles to a centralized command structure via GPS and live feeds, the city aims to reduce response times during transport emergencies. However, the long-term efficacy of these safety measures will depend heavily on sustained technical maintenance of the CCTV and panic alarm systems, as well as consistent inter-departmental coordination between municipal authorities, transit operators, and law enforcement.
