Speaking in Amaravati, TDP leader and Gajuwaka assembly member Srinivasa Rao confirmed that his party considers itself bound by the Home Minister’s statement as an NDA partner. He noted that despite public criticism, the proposed Uniform Civil Code (UCC) would strengthen national unity and help eliminate gender bias across culturally diverse communities. However, Rao also stated that the BJP’s timing on UCC politics served to divert public attention from generational unemployment issues and recent student protests at Jantar Mantar.
The JD(U) adopted a guarded position regarding the proposal. Bihar Deputy Chief Minister Vijay Kumar Chaudhary stated on Tuesday that the party intends to study the specific details of the UCC Bill once presented and will not oppose the measure without cause if its provisions prove unexceptionable.
Chaudhary’s remarks followed public dissent within the party a day earlier. On Monday, senior JD(U) leader and Phulwari Sharif MLA Shyam Rajak voiced strong opposition to the UCC, citing previous positions taken by party chief Nitish Kumar, who had previously indicated willingness to support a parliamentary bill while opposing its direct implementation in Bihar. Responding to the internal disagreement, Chaudhary clarified that JD(U) national working president Sanjay Kumar Jha would hold direct talks on the matter with the Union Home Minister, emphasizing that there was no immediate cause for haste while legislative specifics remain unreleased.
