A series of major infrastructure projects across India, spanning highway expressways, strategic mountain tunnels, and river bridges, has yielded substantial reductions in travel times across key regional and interstate corridors.
According to data reported by Hindustan Times, high-speed road corridors have significantly altered transit durations between major urban centers. The 82-kilometer Delhi-Meerut Expressway has reduced transit times between the two cities from approximately 2.5 hours to roughly 50 minutes. In southern India, the 118-kilometer Bengaluru-Mysuru Expressway has shortened travel times from nearly three hours to around 75 minutes.
Long-distance economic corridors have similarly halved or further reduced transit durations. The Delhi-Dehradun Economic Corridor has brought travel times down from over six hours to approximately 2.5 hours. In Maharashtra, the Mumbai-Nagpur Samruddhi Mahamarg has reduced travel time between Mumbai and Nagpur from roughly 16 hours to eight hours.
In Gujarat, the Ahmedabad-Dholera Expressway shortened the driving distance between Ahmedabad and Dholera from 100 kilometers to 83 kilometers, reducing journey times from two hours and 15 minutes down to 45 minutes. The same network reduced the Ahmedabad-Bhavnagar route from 169 kilometers to 141 kilometers, cutting travel time from three hours and 15 minutes to one hour and 45 minutes.
Key northern transit routes connecting northern states and union territories have also registered significant reductions. The first phase of the Delhi-Amritsar-Katra Expressway has reduced travel from Delhi to Amritsar from eight hours to four hours, while cutting the journey from Delhi to Katra from 14 hours down to six hours.
Strategic bridge and tunnel infrastructure projects in eastern and northern border regions have addressed geography-related transit delays:
* Bhupen Hazarika Setu (Dhola-Sadiya Bridge): Connecting Rupai in Assam to Meka/Roing in Arunachal Pradesh, the bridge reduced travel time from six hours to one hour, saving approximately five hours. Rail distance along the corridor was also reduced from around 300 kilometers to 22 kilometers.
* Sisseri River Bridge: The 200-meter structure in Arunachal Pradesh reduced travel time between Pasighat and Roing by approximately five hours, linking the Dibang Valley and Siang regions.
* Atal Tunnel: The 9.02-kilometer tunnel bypasses the Rohtang Pass, cutting the distance between Manali and Sarchu by 46 kilometers, saving four to five hours of travel and establishing all-weather connectivity to the Lahaul-Spiti region.
* Banihal-Qazigund Tunnel: The 8.45-kilometer twin-tube structure saves approximately 1.5 hours on the Jammu-Srinagar corridor.
* Sela Tunnel: Constructed at an altitude of approximately 13,000 feet in Arunachal Pradesh, the tunnel has reduced travel times along the Tezpur-Tawang route.
