Iranian Foreign Minister Araghchi Heads to Beijing for Talks Ahead of US-China Summit

Date:

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi is scheduled to meet with his Chinese counterpart, Wang Yi, in Beijing on Wednesday, marking his second official trip to the Chinese capital since military conflict involving the United States, Israel, and Iran began at the end of February 2026.

The diplomacy in Beijing comes shortly before a planned summit between U.S. President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping set to take place in Washington later in September. The sequence of meetings highlights Beijing’s ongoing effort to position itself as a neutral arbiter seeking an end to the regional conflict, which has destabilized global energy and financial markets.

Earlier this week at a BRICS summit of Global South nations in New Delhi, President Xi urged member states to act as peacemakers in the Middle East. Xi outlined a four-point de-escalation framework focused on respect for national sovereignty, peaceful coexistence, adherence to international law, and balancing security with development. While China seeks to mitigate economic disruption caused by the war, analysts note Beijing has historically hesitated to entangle itself deeply in complex third-party conflicts or high-risk diplomatic mediation.

Xi’s declarations have drawn varying assessments within Tehran regarding China’s intentions. Former Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif praised the remarks, stating that Xi’s initiatives provide timely opportunities to reduce tensions and demonstrate that multilateral diplomacy remains the sole path to regional stability. Conversely, Hamed Vafaei, a China researcher and professor at the University of Tehran, cautioned that viewing Xi’s statements as a direct offer to mediate between Washington and Tehran reflects a loose interpretation of Beijing’s official posture.

During his visit, Araghchi is also expected to discuss Tehran’s nuclear programme with Chinese officials as the United States attempts to renew international focus on Iran’s nuclear activities. Previous diplomatic referrals 20 years ago resulted in six UN Security Council resolutions and extensive international sanctions against the Iranian economy. However, current institutional shifts indicate that renewed symbolic measures are facing strong opposition, with both China and Russia resisting escalation against Tehran.
