Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) chief Mayawati announced a final decision to bar her nephews from holding any political roles or organizational positions within the party, framing the move as a commitment to anti-nepotism principles.
In a statement posted in Hindi on X on Saturday, Mayawati declared that none of the sons of her youngest brother, Anand Kumar—specifically referencing nephews Akash and Ishan—will be permitted to engage in politics by holding any position, large or small, within the BSP. The announcement followed her recent removal of Akash from key party responsibilities ahead of upcoming elections in Uttar Pradesh.
Mayawati stated that her primary focus remains the welfare of the “Bahujan Samaj family.” She aligned her decision with the stance of BSP founder Kanshi Ram, noting that she has consistently sought to keep family members away from positions as MPs, MLAs, ministers, or other political offices, confining them strictly to party work.
Explaining her personal setup, Mayawati said that as an unmarried woman, she relies on her youngest brother, Anand Kumar, to stay with her to ensure her personal safety and manage administrative hassles. While noting that Kumar has handled important party responsibilities under her direct supervision, Mayawati emphasized that allowing his family members to leverage this arrangement would harm the party’s movement.
Under the declared policy, if Anand Kumar requires organizational assistance while remaining with her, he may seek help from his only daughter, Kumari Deepika Anand, who is currently studying law. Mayawati noted that, based on her efficiency and loyalty, Deepika Anand could be assigned responsibilities within the party as needed. However, Mayawati explicitly ruled out handing responsibilities to Kumar’s two sons or their children in the future.
If Deepika Anand is unwilling to take on party duties, Mayawati instructed that the responsibilities should be handed over to another dedicated missionary worker from within the Dalit community, subject to party consensus.
