Students considering an allied or healthcare degree in India’s 2026-27 admission cycle have a new national course framework to navigate. The most important precaution is simple: verify the exact degree specification, entry rule, duration and clinical-training arrangement before paying an admission fee. A college’s presence on an institution-data portal is not, by itself, proof of programme approval or professional registration.
Herald Express reviewed the Health Ministry’s published account of the UGC amendment, the official NCAHP institute-enrolment notice and a live university entrance portal. Those sources confirm that national standardisation is advancing, but different parts of the system are at different stages.
Start with the exact degree name
The UGC amendment adds 33 degree specifications and restructures or updates 21 others under the NCAHP regulatory framework. The Health Ministry says the notification specifies degree nomenclature, abbreviation, programme duration and entry qualifications. Applicants should therefore compare every word in a college advertisement with the current official course name rather than assuming that an older, similar-sounding title is interchangeable.
The published disciplines include physiotherapy, occupational therapy, optometry, medical laboratory sciences, emergency medical technology, anaesthesia and operation theatre technology, nutrition and dietetics, psychology, radiology and imaging, physician associate studies, respiratory technology, dialysis therapy and health information management. Because the official release says “among others,” students should consult the Gazette specification or the university’s current prospectus for the precise programme they intend to enter.
A six-part pre-payment checklist
- Nomenclature: Ask the institution to identify the exact UGC degree specification and show where it appears in its current prospectus or university notice.
- Entry qualification: Confirm the required subjects, minimum marks and any entrance test. Do not rely on a sales call when a written university rule is available.
- Duration: Ask for the academic and internship components separately. The national reform includes duration changes for selected programmes and emphasises adequate clinical training.
- Affiliation and authority: Identify the degree-awarding university and the applicable state or national authority. Keep a copy of the notice valid for the 2026-27 batch.
- Clinical placement: Obtain the names and role of associated hospitals or practice facilities, the expected internship period and who supervises training.
- Transition rule: If a programme has been renamed or restructured, ask in writing which rules apply to students admitted before and after the change.
Enrolment is not registration
The NCAHP-linked AHIR portal invites institutions and colleges to contribute data to a nationwide database. It says no fee is charged for this enrolment. Crucially, the portal describes the exercise as data collection, states that it is not registration and says registration regulations are under process. It says registration will begin after State Council verification once regulations are notified.
That message concerns the portal’s present function; it does not cancel the separate UGC degree notification or the direction to implement released curricula. Students should avoid two opposite mistakes: dismissing the new curriculum framework because registration rules are still developing, or treating a data-enrolment entry as a universal stamp of approval.
Deadlines differ by university
Maharaja Ranjit Singh Punjab Technical University provides a useful real-world example, but not a national calendar. Its official postgraduate allied-health portal lists nine examination disciplines. For its own 2026-27 process, the application deadline was 24 July, admit cards were scheduled for 26 August, the examination and answer key for 6 September, objections through 8 September, and results or certificates for 11 September.
Applicants at other institutions need the dates issued by their own university or state. A national policy announcement does not reopen a closed local application period or create a common India-wide test date.
Questions for current students
Students already enrolled should ask whether the revised nomenclature affects their batch, whether the university will use a new title on transcripts, and whether internship or curriculum requirements change. They should seek a written answer from the degree-awarding institution. Marketing assurances from a training centre are weaker evidence than a university ordinance, prospectus, examination notice or transition circular.
Keep the admission notice, fee receipt, prospectus, affiliation statement and written replies together. These records provide a contemporaneous account of what the institution represented for the student’s batch. If an answer conflicts with an official notice, ask the university or relevant council to clarify before making an irreversible payment.

Students should monitor official updates for their particular discipline and batch instead of assuming that one general announcement resolves every eligibility or registration question.
