Three brothers have been arrested in connection with the murder of their 65-year-old aunt in Ranipet after a property dispute turned violent, Tamil Nadu police said on Thursday.
The victim, identified as K. Murugesan, was found dead with multiple injuries at her residence in Thiruvannamalai Road, Ranipet, on Wednesday morning following a complaint filed by her brother. Police stated that the accused had been involved in a prolonged dispute over the partition of ancestral property.
Ranipet Superintendent of Police P. Thiagarajan confirmed that the three brothers, aged between 35 and 45, were apprehended from different locations in the district late on Wednesday night. Investigators recovered Murugesan’s jewelry and a mobile phone from the scene, which are believed to have been the motive behind the crime.
The SP further stated that the accused had been warned earlier by local authorities about potential legal consequences if the dispute remained unresolved, but the family failed to pursue mediation. A case has been registered under sections 302 of the Indian Penal Code and relevant provisions of the Tamil Nadu Land Reforms Act.
Analysis: The case highlights the recurring pattern of property disputes escalating to fatal violence in rural Tamil Nadu, where traditional conflict resolution mechanisms often fail to prevent extreme outcomes. Police had previously issued advisories to the family regarding the pending legal proceedings on land partition, but the matter progressed to homicide within months. Authorities have launched a fresh investigation to recover the missing valuables and determine if any additional conspirators were involved in the crime.
