Breaking Retail Sugar Price Drops 3.85% to ₹62.57/kg in a Week: Govt Data

Breaking News — updating as confirmed details emerge

Retail sugar prices in India have declined by 3.85 percent to ₹62.57 per kilogram in the span of one week, according to government data.

The data from consumer affairs ministry sources shows the price of the essential commodity has softened in recent days. However, industry analysts note that retail prices at the consumer level may take additional time to fully reflect the wholesale decline.

A retailer typically maintains inventory of 10 to 15 bags of sugar, with each bag weighing 50 kilograms. Since retailers have existing stock purchased at higher rates, consumers are expected to see further price relief only after fresh inventory is procured at the reduced rate.

The wholesale-to-retail transmission of commodity prices typically follows a lag, with retailers exhausting older, higher-priced stock before passing on savings to buyers.

Sugar prices in India have been under pressure from adequate domestic supply following a record production year. The decline follows months of relative stability in retail sugar prices despite fluctuations in wholesale markets.

The commodity falls under essential goods regulations, with both central and state governments monitoring price movements closely to guard against unreasonable hikes.
