Farmers’ Associations Push for Reopening of Toddy Taps in Tamil Nadu

Date:

Chennai — Farmers’ associations in Tamil Nadu are calling on the state government to lift the longstanding ban on toddy, arguing that legalization would generate employment and support rural families dependent on palm tree cultivation.

C. Nallasamy, coordinator of the Tamil Nadu Toddy Movement, said lifting the prohibition would have direct economic benefits for communities across the state.

“The reopening of toddy taps will create jobs and help many families,” Nallasamy said, according to statements provided to The Hindu.

Toddy, a traditional beverage fermented from palm tree sap, has been banned in Tamil Nadu for decades. The industry historically provided income for millions of rural workers, including tappers, transporters, and sellers.

The farmers’ associations argue that a regulated toddy market could revitalize rural economies while providing an alternative livelihood for agricultural workers facing seasonal income gaps.

Analysis: The demand reflects broader calls in several southern Indian states to reconsider alcohol prohibitions, with advocates citing both economic and cultural arguments. Opponents of toddy liberalization typically raise public health concerns, mirroring debates over other alcohol policies. The outcome will likely depend on the state government’s position and whether the proposal gains traction in the legislative assembly. Legalizing toddy would require amending existing prohibition laws and establishing a regulatory framework for production and sales.
