Breaking State Highways Inaugurates ₹20.81‑Crore Rail Over Bridge in Tirupattur

Date:

Breaking News — updating as confirmed details emerge

The Tamil Nadu State Highways Department officially opened a new rail over bridge (ROB) in Tirupattur on Wednesday, completing a project first approved in 2020. The ₹20.81 crore structure, built jointly by the Southern Railway and the department’s Projects wing, is intended to ease traffic congestion and improve safety at the busy railway crossing on the Chennai–Bengaluru line.

The bridge, which spans approximately 300 metres and includes two lanes in each direction, allows vehicles to bypass the level crossing that previously caused frequent delays for commuters and freight traffic. State Highways Minister K. R. Thangaraju, accompanied by Southern Railway officials, cut the ceremonial ribbon and invited the public to use the facility immediately.

According to the State Highways Department, the project was sanctioned in the 2020‑21 budget and construction began in early 2021. The work was executed under a cost‑shared model, with the Southern Railway contributing to design and civil works, while the State Highways Department oversaw project management and funding. The department’s release noted that the ROB will reduce vehicular waiting time at the crossing by an estimated 30‑40 minutes during peak hours.

Local officials said the bridge is expected to boost regional commerce by facilitating smoother movement of goods between the industrial zones of Vellore district and the hinterland. “This infrastructure will not only improve commuter safety but also support economic activity in the region,” the minister said during the inauguration.

The opening follows a series of recent railway‑road integration projects across Tamil Nadu aimed at de‑congesting level crossings, a longstanding safety concern highlighted by the National Crime Records Bureau. As of 2023, the state reported over 2,000 accidents at railway crossings, prompting accelerated investment in grade‑separation works.

Analysis:
The collaborative funding model reflects a broader trend of state agencies partnering with central railway bodies to share costs and expertise on large‑scale infrastructure. By leveraging Southern Railway’s technical experience with State Highways’ project execution capacity, the ₹20.81 crore investment aligns with the state’s objective to modernise transport corridors ahead of the projected 2028 economic summit in Chennai. However, the bridge’s long‑term impact will depend on complementary upgrades, such as road widening and traffic‑signal integration, to fully capitalize on the reduced crossing delays.
