Two major weather systems are active across the Pacific Ocean this week, as Hurricane Polo moves along Mexico’s southwestern coastline and Hurricane Nolo strengthens on a path toward Hawaii, according to weather reports and emergency officials.
In Mexico, Hurricane Polo has fluctuated between Category 4 and Category 5 intensity on the Saffir-Simpson scale while moving along the country’s coast. The National Hurricane Center (NHC) stated that Polo is expected to regain Category 5 status on Friday. The storm poses the primary threat to the neighboring states of Guerrero and Michoacan, regions lined with fishing villages, small ports, and tourist towns.
Mexican authorities have deployed 15,000 security personnel along the coast, ordered school suspensions, opened emergency shelters, and begun evacuating residents from high-risk locations. John Bravender, a warning coordination meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Honolulu, stated that in his 20 years of experience, he had never seen three hurricane watches issued for the islands within the same year. Bravender warned that the heaviest rainfall is projected over the southeastern portion of the Big Island—the same area where ground remains saturated from Hurricane Lala in August, and where previous storms caused isolated communities, flooded areas, and washed-out roads.
Hawaii’s governor has issued an emergency proclamation, mobilizing more than 230 members of the Hawaii National Guard and closing schools across the state for the remainder of the week. State power utility Hawaiian Electric announced that utility crews previously working to restore power on Kauai following Hurricane Lowell earlier this month are being relocated to Oahu, Maui, and the Big Island to prepare for Nolo’s arrival.
