WASHINGTON — Nearly seven months into the armed conflict with Iran, diplomatic negotiations between Washington and Tehran remain stalled as military friction expands from the Strait of Hormuz to critical shipping lanes in the Red Sea.
In September 2026, Iran-backed Houthi forces seized key positions along the Yemeni coastline, directly threatening regional maritime trade routes and conducting attacks against targets inside Saudi Arabia.
U.S. President Donald Trump reportedly evaluated potential airstrikes against Houthi positions before choosing to abandon the option. Axios reported that Trump declined a formal request from Saudi Arabia to launch strikes against the Yemeni militia. Over the weekend, Fox News reported that Trump claimed Houthi rebels agreed to refrain from targeting American assets.
The U.S. campaign has imposed significant economic sanctions and military pressure on Iran, visibly weakening aspects of Tehran’s defense capabilities. However, Iranian officials have not capitulated, and the opposing sides have failed to reach a lasting ceasefire agreement.
Fatemeh Aman, an Iran expert who has worked with institutions including the Middle East Institute, the Atlantic Council, RFE/RL, and Voice of America, told DW that the U.S. administration aims to conclude the war under specific conditions. “President Trump wants to end the Iran war from a position that allows him to claim that Iran’s nuclear and military capabilities have been significantly weakened, freedom of navigation has been restored, and Tehran has been forced back to the negotiating table,” Aman said, adding that an overarching strategy to secure these outcomes remains difficult to discern.
Washington is turning toward high-level international diplomatic meetings in an effort to resolve the stalemate. Trump is scheduled to hold discussions in Washington this week with Chinese President Xi Jinping. China remains the largest commercial buyer of Iranian oil and maintains key political ties with Tehran. Trump is expected to address China’s trade relations with Iran, seeking Beijing’s assistance in exercising leverage over Tehran to preserve freedom of navigation through the Strait of Hormuz.
Simultaneously, Trump signaled a willingness to hold discussions with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian, who is traveling to New York to attend the United Nations General Assembly. Senior diplomatic officials from several Gulf states are also scheduled to arrive in the United States over the coming days.
