Artemis II Astronauts Victor Glover and Reid Wiseman Transition to Emeritus Roles at NASA

Date:

Artemis II astronauts Victor Glover and Reid Wiseman are transitioning to emeritus status at NASA following their historic lunar mission earlier this year, the agency announced. In their new roles, the two veteran astronauts will continue to advise and mentor NASA teams as operational preparations accelerate for Artemis III and subsequent deep-space missions.

Wiseman, who commanded Artemis II, previously logged 165 days aboard the International Space Station and served as NASA’s chief astronaut. Glover, who served as pilot on Artemis II, brought background as a naval aviator and test pilot alongside prior spaceflight experience from NASA’s Crew-1 mission.

“I’ve had the privilege of knowing Reid and Victor for years, and both exemplify the leadership, character, and commitment that define NASA at its best,” said NASA Administrator Jared Isaacman. “As Reid and Victor transition to emeritus status, I’m grateful they will continue sharing what they learned with our astronauts, flight controllers, and engineers as we prepare for Artemis III in 2027 and the missions that follow.”

In their advisory positions, both astronauts will focus on transferring technical and operational insights to engineering and flight control personnel. Glover’s work will center on transferring detailed operational knowledge of the Orion spacecraft and its core systems to project teams.

“As I grow into this new role, NASA and spaceflight remain a meaningful part of my journey of service,” Glover said, noting plans to remain active in aerospace, leadership, and public service.

Wiseman similarly confirmed he will remain engaged in passing along spaceflight experience to current teams. “There is no better place to work, and there are no better people to work with, than those in this agency,” Wiseman said, adding that NASA supported his family and career through two spaceflight missions and his tenure as chief astronaut.

The mentorship shift comes as NASA advances preparations for the Artemis III mission, currently targeted for 2027. Planned for low Earth orbit, Artemis III will focus on testing rendezvous and docking operations between the Orion spacecraft and commercial human landing systems before future deep-space endeavors.
