PATNA, India — Flooding in Bihar has affected approximately 47.33 lakh people across 87 blocks in 15 districts, according to official figures released by the state Disaster Management Department on Friday, September 11, 2026.
The affected districts include Patna, Bhojpur, Saran, Vaishali, Bhagalpur, Begusarai, Buxar, Samastipur, Munger, Katihar, Lakhisarai, Khagaria, Purnea, Arwal, and Madhepura. Authorities report that while water levels in several major rivers are beginning to recede or stabilise, multiple river stretches remain above their critical danger levels.
According to data compiled by 6 p.m. on Friday, the Ganga River was flowing above the danger level at several locations, including Maner, Digha Ghat, Gandhi Ghat, and Hathidah in Patna, as well as Munger, despite showing a declining trend at those sites. Its water level remained steady at Buxar, where it was below the danger mark.
Other rivers continuing to flow above danger marks include the Gandak at Dumariaghat, the Kosi at Baltara and Kursela, the Burhi Gandak at Khagaria, the Punpun at Sripalpur, the Baghmati at Benibad, and the Ghaghara at Darauli and Gangpur Siswan.
Water discharge figures from major barrages showed varying trends on Friday evening. Discharge from the Gandak River at the Valmikinagar Barrage was recorded at 86,000 cusecs with an increasing trend, down from its peak of 2,24,000 cusecs recorded on July 14, 2026. The Kosi River’s discharge at the Birpur Barrage stood at 1,41,295 cusecs and was also trending upward, compared to its high of 2,55,425 cusecs on July 20. Conversely, the Sone River at the Indrapuri Barrage registered a declining discharge of 67,737 cusecs, significantly lower than its season peak of 5,63,654 cusecs recorded on September 2.
In response to the crisis, state authorities have deployed 27 State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) teams and 10 National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) teams to carry out rescue and relief operations across impacted areas. A fleet of 1,876 boats is actively operating to facilitate resident evacuations and local transportation.
Relief efforts coordinated by the Disaster Management Department currently include 1,221 operational community kitchens, which have served over 59.73 lakh meals to affected residents so far. Additionally, 15 dedicated relief camps are sheltering 12,260 flood victims, providing medical support, food, and accommodation.
Distribution efforts have provided 3.13 lakh polythene sheets and 48,400 dry-ration packets to displaced families, alongside 10,823 quintals of cattle feed to support livestock in the inundated districts. Monitoring of river embankments and relief distribution remains ongoing.
