Kerala — The Kerala State Social Welfare Department launched the first phase of the K.M. Mani Educational Excellence Award distribution on Tuesday, extending the ceremony to all 14 districts through a series of district‑ and regional‑level events, officials said.
The awards, instituted in memory of former finance minister K.M. Mani, recognize schools, teachers and students who have achieved notable academic results and contributed to community‑based learning initiatives. According to the department, more than 3,000 recipients will be honored in the rollout, which began with a ceremony at the Government Secretariat in Thiruvananthapuram before moving to district headquarters.

District education officers will conduct the award functions over the next two months, following a uniform protocol that includes a citation, a cash prize of ₹10,000 for students and ₹5,000 for teachers, and a commemorative plaque. The regional functions, scheduled for larger districts such as Kozhikode and Alappuzha, will also feature speeches from local political leaders and education experts.
The award program is funded through the Kerala Education Development Fund, which allocates ₹50 crore annually for the initiative. The department noted that the funding model is designed to be sustainable, with contributions from both state and private donors.
