Bengaluru Creche Abuse Case: Caregiver Arrested, More Arrests Likely

Date:

Bengaluru, India — Police in Karnataka have arrested a caregiver from Little Buds Day Care after videos of alleged child mistreatment at the facility circulated on social media, officials said on Tuesday. The arrest follows a broader investigation that could lead to additional detentions, according to the Bengaluru City Police.

The videos, which first appeared on WhatsApp and other platforms, show a young child being physically restrained and subjected to harsh handling. After the clips went viral, the police launched a probe, seized the creche’s premises and questioned staff members.

Karnataka’s Deputy Commissioner of Police (Crime) K. S. Ramesh confirmed that the 27‑year‑old caregiver, identified as Shreya M., was taken into custody for “violation of child protection laws” and “acts of cruelty.” He said forensic analysis of the footage is underway and that the caregiver will be produced before a magistrate within 24 hours.

“The investigation is ongoing, and we are sorting out the chain of responsibility,” Ramesh told reporters. “We have already identified additional staff members who may be implicated, and arrests are likely as the inquiry progresses.”

Little Buds Day Care, located in the eastern part of Bengaluru, has been ordered to remain closed pending a safety audit by the state’s Child Welfare Department. The department’s director, Dr. Anjali Rao, said a team would inspect the facility and review its licensing records. “Any establishment that fails to meet child‑care standards will face stringent penalties, including revocation of its licence,” Rao said.

Parents of children enrolled at the creche have expressed shock and demanded swift justice. “We trusted this place with our children’s safety. This betrayal is unacceptable,” said one parent who asked not to be named.

Legal experts note that the Karnataka Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (PoCSO) Act and the Indian Penal Code provisions on cruelty to children could be invoked, potentially leading to imprisonment of up to five years for the caregiver and harsher penalties for any senior staff found complicit.

Analysis: The arrest underscores heightened public sensitivity to child‑abuse allegations in India, especially after several high‑profile cases in recent years. Social media’s role in amplifying the videos likely pressured authorities to act quickly, but it also raises concerns about due process and the verification of raw footage. If further arrests are made, the case could prompt a review of regulatory oversight for private day‑care centers in Karnataka, where rapid urban growth has outpaced formal licensing and inspection mechanisms.
