Breaking Accountant General Office Officer Nabbed in ₹13,000 Lokayukta Bribery Sting

Breaking News — updating as confirmed details emerge

Bengaluru — A senior accountant at Karnataka’s Accountant General Office was arrested on Wednesday after allegedly accepting a ₹13,000 cash bribe in an operation coordinated by the state Lokayukta, officials said.

According to the Lokayukta’s anti‑corruption cell, the officer, identified as Shashank Kumar, was approached by a “dummy” petitioner who claimed to need assistance in obtaining a government‑issued certificate. The petitioner offered the cash as a “facilitation fee.” Kumar accepted the money, after which the Lokayukta team recorded the transaction on video and seized the cash.

Kumar was taken into custody by police at the office premises and produced before a magistrate. He has been charged under the Karnataka Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988, for accepting a pecuniary advantage “in connection with his official duties.”

The Lokayukta’s chief, Justice (Retd.) R. S. Mahesh, said the sting operation was part of a broader effort to expose and deter corruption within government departments. “We are sending a clear signal that any attempt to misuse public office for personal gain will be met with swift legal action,” Mahesh told reporters.

The Accountant General Office, which manages payroll and financial disbursements for Karnataka’s state government, declined to comment on the specific allegations but confirmed that the matter is under internal review.

Analysis:
The incident underscores ongoing concerns about low‑level corruption in state bureaucracies, especially in offices handling large volumes of financial transactions. While the bribe amount—₹13,000—is modest, the case may have a deterrent effect if it leads to stricter monitoring and internal controls. Critics of the Lokayukta have occasionally questioned the agency’s reliance on sting operations, arguing that they can sometimes target vulnerable officials rather than high‑ranking decision‑makers. However, supporters contend that such operations are necessary to uncover informal payment practices that are otherwise difficult to prove.

The Karnataka government has not yet announced any policy changes in response to the arrest. Observers will be watching whether this case prompts broader reforms, such as enhanced digitisation of certificate issuance and tighter oversight of financial officers, to reduce opportunities for illicit payments.
