Breaking Centre Forms Panel to Review Diljit Dosanjh’s “Satluj” After OTT Takedown

Breaking News — updating as confirmed details emerge

NEW DELHI — The Union government announced on Friday that a high‑level committee will examine the content of the Punjabi‑language film “Satluj,” starring singer‑actor Diljit Dosanjh, following a directive from the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting (MIB) that led OTT platform Zee5 to remove the movie from its catalogue.

The panel, chaired by Minister of State for Information and Broadcasting Rajendra P. Sinha, will include officials from the MIB, the Ministry of Home Affairs, and representatives of the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC). Its mandate is to assess whether the film violates Indian law, particularly provisions related to national security, public order and the depiction of historical events.

The MIB’s order to Zee5, issued on March 21, cited concerns that “Satluj” contains “sensitive content” that could “adversely affect public sentiment.” Zee5 complied with the takedown on the same day, removing the film from its streaming library nationwide.

In a statement, Diljit Dosanjh expressed disappointment at the removal, saying the film was “a tribute to Punjab’s heritage” and that he was “confident the story will stand up to scrutiny.” The actor’s legal counsel, Advocate Ranjit Singh, announced plans to challenge the takedown in the Delhi High Court, arguing that the action infringes on artistic freedom and lacks a clear legal basis.

The newly formed committee is expected to submit its findings within 30 days. Depending on its conclusions, the film could either be cleared for re‑release on OTT platforms, face further restrictions, or be barred from distribution altogether.

Analysis: The government’s swift formation of a panel signals heightened scrutiny of regional language content on digital platforms, especially when it touches on historical or political themes. By involving multiple ministries and the CBFC, the administration is positioning the review as a coordinated effort rather than a unilateral censorship move. Critics, including members of the Indian Film and Television Directors’ Association, have warned that such interventions could set a precedent for broader control over streaming content, potentially chilling creative expression. The outcome of the panel’s review will likely influence how OTT services self‑regulate and may prompt further legal challenges on the balance between national security concerns and freedom of speech in India’s evolving digital media landscape.
