BJP Launches Outreach Push to Counter Opposition Allegations of Election Rigging

Date:

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has launched a counter-offensive and expanded public outreach to address claims by Opposition parties that recent elections were rigged through large-scale voter deletions.

The strategy comes as senior party officials seek to prevent potential public unrest. According to party leaders, the BJP is acting to contain the allegations before they gain traction on the ground, aiming to avoid widespread street demonstrations similar to the year-long farm law protests in 2020, the three-month sit-in over the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA), or recent student demonstrations over paper leaks that led to the resignation of Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan.

Internal discussions within the party reflect mixed views on the impact of the Opposition’s campaign. While some party leaders expressed concern that claims regarding voter identification and deletion could resonate across broader social classes, others pointed to prior electoral outcomes as evidence that such narratives have limited traction.

During the Bihar assembly elections, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi and Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) leader Tejasvi Yadav conducted a 1,300-kilometer yatra across 25 districts, alleging that 6.5 million voters were affected by the Special Summary Revision (SIR). Despite the allegations, the BJP-JDU coalition secured 174 out of 243 seats, while Opposition parties won 35. Party officials argued that the lack of post-election public protests in Bihar indicated that the claims failed to convince voters.

The BJP maintains that the SIR process represents a legal and effective framework designed to rectify electoral roll discrepancies and remove ineligible voters.

To challenge the Opposition’s argument, BJP MP Sambit Patra cited voter data from constituencies with significant deletion figures. Patra stated that in the 20 assembly constituencies with the highest number of voter deletions, the Trinamool Congress (TMC) won 13 seats, the BJP won six, and the Congress won one.

Specific figures cited by Patra included Shamsherganj, where the TMC won despite 74,775 voter deletions; Lalgola, where 55,420 votes were deleted prior to a TMC victory; and Bhagawangola, where 47,493 deletions occurred ahead of a TMC win. Patra argued that these electoral outcomes contradict claims that voter deletions were designed to benefit the ruling party.

Party officials stated that outreach efforts will focus on clarifying the administrative intent of the electoral roll revisions to counter claims made by Opposition groups.
