A man who fled from the Kalaburagi central jail in Karnataka was apprehended by police and jail officials on Monday in a coordinated operation. The escape, toilets, and subsequent arrest were reported by authorities in the city and confirmed by the Karnataka Home Department.
The inmate, whose identity has not yet been released by the department, was said to have escaped from the validating block on the evening of 7 June 2026. He was tracked through surveillance footage and a series of checkpoints set up by the police and prison staff.
Police spokespersons said the prisoner was captured at a rural road near the town of Chincholi, about 30 kilometers southeast of Kalaburagi. The arrest took place after a brief confrontation, and the man was taken to the central jail for processing.
The Kalaburagi jail’s superintendent stated that the escape was due to a lapse in security protocols, and said the authorities are reviewing procedures and enhancing surveillance. The Karnataka Home Minister announced a review of jail security measures following the incident.
No injuries were reported during the arrest, and the prisoner is expected to face charges related to escape and any other offenses associated with his original conviction.
The incident has drawn attention to jail security practices across the state, prompting calls from civil society groups for stricter oversight.
