Three Workers Injured After Sidewall Collapse at SCCL’s SRP‑3 Mine in Mancherial

Date:

Mancherial, Telangana — A sidewall collapse at the Southern Coalfields Limited (SCL) SRP‑3 underground coal mine in Mancherial district injured three miners on Tuesday, officials said. The incident occurred during routine extraction activities, and the injured workers were promptly moved to a nearby hospital for treatment, according to a statement from the mine’s management.

The district’s superintendent of mines confirmed that rescue teams were dispatched to the site within minutes, and that the affected area was secured to prevent further accidents. No fatalities were reported.

Following the accident, MP Konda Vishweshwar Reddy of the Peddapalli constituency raised the matter in the Lok Sabha, seeking a detailed inquiry into the safety protocols at the mine. Reddy asked the Ministry of Coal to submit a report on the cause of the collapse and to ensure that the mine complies with all statutory safety standards.

SCL, a subsidiary of Coal India Limited, has not yet released a comprehensive investigation report. The company’s spokesperson said the incident is under “thorough review” and that the organization is cooperating with the Ministry of Coal and local authorities.

Analysis:
The collapse highlights ongoing safety concerns in India’s underground mining sector, where accidents remain relatively common despite regulatory reforms. The prompt medical response suggests improvements in emergency preparedness, yet the incident may prompt stricter oversight of sidewall support practices. The MP’s parliamentary query could pressure both the company and the Ministry of Coal to accelerate safety audits and enforce compliance, especially as the SRP‑3 mine is a significant producer in the region’s coal output.
