Breaking Museum, Water‑Sports and Resorts Planned at Polavaram, Says Water Resources Minister

Date:

Breaking News — updating as confirmed details emerge

The Andhra Pradesh government is reviewing conceptual designs for a tourism corridor that would link the Polavaram irrigation project with the pilgrimage town of Bhadrachalam, passing through the Papikonda forest area. The designs, prepared by a Japanese consultancy, include a museum, water‑sports facilities and resort complexes aimed at boosting regional tourism, Water Resources Minister Nimmala Ramanaidu told reporters on Sunday.

Ramanaidu said the government is in the “evaluation stage” of the proposals and that a detailed project report will be prepared before any commitment is made. He added that the corridor is intended to leverage the existing Polavaram reservoir and the Godavari River’s flow to create recreational opportunities while also generating employment for local communities.

The minister did not disclose the name of the Japanese firm or the estimated cost of the project. He indicated that the initiative would be coordinated with the state’s tourism department and that environmental clearances would be sought, given that the proposed route traverses the ecologically sensitive Papikonda region.

Analysis:
If approved, the corridor could diversify the economic base of a region that has largely been focused on agriculture and hydro‑electric power generation. However, the Papikonda forest is home to several tribal groups and a range of wildlife, and past development projects in the area have faced criticism over displacement and ecological impact. The need for rigorous environmental assessment and transparent stakeholder consultation will be crucial to mitigate potential opposition.

The proposal also reflects a broader trend among Indian states to pair large‑scale infrastructure, such as dams, with tourism amenities to improve return on investment. Success will depend on securing funding, navigating regulatory approvals and ensuring that promised benefits reach local populations rather than being captured by external developers.
