Women Alleging Rape and Sexual Assault in France Call to Abolish Statute of Limitations

Date:

More than 50 women across France have urged lawmakers to scrap the country’s statute of limitations for rape and sexual‑assault cases, arguing that the legal time‑frame has blocked many from seeking justice.

The women, who remain unnamed, said the current statute allows criminal charges to be filed only within five years of the alleged assault. For many survivors, the period has passed before they could come forward, often after years of trauma and fear of retaliation.

“We have been denied a chance to get justice because the law says we are too late,” one woman told reporters. “It feels like the system is protecting the abusers, not the victims.”

The calls for reform come amid a broader European debate over extending or eliminating limitations for sexual‑assault cases. France’s Parliament has considered amendments in the past, but none have passed.

Civil‑society groups that support the women’s cause say that removing the limitation would help bring more perpetrators to account and could encourage greater reporting of abuse. Critics warn that eliminating the time limit could lead to challenges in gathering evidence and ensuring fair trials.

The French government has not yet responded to the petition. The French National Assembly is scheduled to debate a new bill on sexual‑violence reform later this year, which may address the limitations issue.

Analysis: The movement reflects growing pressure on European legislatures to rethink how they balance victims’ rights with procedural safeguards. If France were to abolish the statute of limitations, it would join a handful of countries that have already removed time limits for sexual‑assault cases, potentially setting a precedent for further legal reforms across the continent.
