Boreal Forest Canopies Prevent Thawing of 59 Billion Tonnes of Carbon

Date:

Thick forest canopies in northern regions act as a critical thermal shield, keeping underlying permafrost approximately one meter cooler during summer months and preventing the release of massive carbon stores, according to new research.

The study indicates that this natural shading mechanism is essential for safeguarding roughly 59 billion tonnes of carbon currently locked within the frozen soil. By blocking direct solar radiation, the boreal forests prevent the soil from thawing to depths that would otherwise expose organic matter to decomposition.

Researchers noted that this specific cooling service provided by forest cover has been largely overlooked in previous climate models. The findings suggest that the stability of northern carbon sinks is more dependent on surface vegetation than previously accounted for in global warming projections.

Analysis:
The discovery that forest canopies provide a measurable thermal buffer suggests a compounding risk in the event of deforestation or large-scale forest die-offs. If these forests are lost to logging, wildfire, or pest infestations, the resulting “unshading” of the permafrost could trigger a feedback loop: higher soil temperatures lead to increased thawing, which releases greenhouse gases, further accelerating global warming. The fact that this variable was missing from prior climate models implies that current estimates of carbon release from permafrost may be undercalculated.
